Construction and Operation

Standard Crankshaft Vibration Dampers

The Enidine Viscous Torsional Vibration Damper is standard equipment on GE locomotive engines and is necessary to prevent premature crankshaft failure and other costly damage.
The viscous damper is a simple design consisting of a free rotating inertia ring surrounded by a high-viscosity silicone fluid enclosed in a leakproof housing. When crankshaft vibrations occur, the outer housing of the damper reacts with the crank, twisting as it rotates. The inertia ring moves out of phase with the housing. This relative motion between the inertia ring and the housing causes the inertia ring to shear the silicone fluid, effectively reducing vibration.
